BPA’s coaches are Southern California’s best with all playing at professional and/or collegiate levels and all having extensive coaching experience ranging from collegiate to high school to elite travel teams. Combined backgrounds make BPA coaches one of the one most knowledgeable coaching staffs in the country.

Eric Castro, Baseball Hitting InstructorErik Castro

Drafted in the 10th round by the Houston Astros in 2009, Erik played 6 seasons of professional baseball (2009-2014) for The Houston Astros and Atlanta Braves. Over the 2012-2013 seasons, Erik launched 45 HR, drove in 173 runs, while hitting at a .283 clip.  Erik now runs the day to day operations at BPA, is the Director of Team Operations for BPA San Diego and is a player advisor for PSI Sports Management.

Erik grew up in North San Diego County where he played at CYB as a youth player. After playing four years of Varsity baseball for Coach Matt Parker at Fallbrook High School, Erik played college ball at University of Arizona and SDSU under head coach, Tony Gywnn, and was an All-Mountain West selection in 2009.


Chris Doyle, San Diego County Baseball Coaching and LessonsChris Doyle

Chris joined the Texas Rangers organization where he focused on scouting, player development, and video analysis. As part of the Baseball Operations department, he evaluated talent and worked alongside the coaching staff with the Texas Rangers Arizona Summer League and the Texas Rangers Triple AAA team. Chris gained international experience when The Rangers sent him to the Dominican Republic to scout young prospects and to learn the club’s international day-to-day baseball operations.

Chris played Division I baseball at UC Davis. During the summer of 2011 he also competed in the Alaskan Summer League. A long-time baseball player from Encinitas, California, Chris played all four years at La Costa Canyon High School and competed at the highest levels of travel ball throughout Southern California. His work experience at the professional level has provided him with the essential tools and skills to coach and evaluate talent at all ages which serves him well as the BPA Team Programs Director.

Derric Waller

Derric was born and raised in San Diego. After playing high school baseball at Valhalla High School in east county San Diego, he earned a scholarship to San Diego State, playing the ‘93-‘95 seasons. During his years at SDSU he earned All League honors playing for the Fairbanks Goldpanners in the Alaskan Summer League. Derric then played professionally for the Salinas Peppers of the Western Baseball League.

Derric’s extensive business background includes sales and executive positions at GEICO, College Loan Corp., and AIG. In 2010, he started MIT Baseball Club after helping coach a successful CYB All Star team, and helped grow MIT to 14 teams. Derric holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Finance from Liberty University and graduated with honors. In addition to managing BPA’s Youth Team Program, Derric coaches Varsity Baseball at San Marcos High School and is CFO of Sandlot Gamez LLC.

John Pecoraro, Hitting and Pitching Instruction in San Diego CountyJohn Pecoraro

John played Division I baseball for Hall of Famer, Tony Gwynn, at San Diego State University on a baseball scholarship. Originally from La Jolla, John played for Paloma Valley High School in Menifee, where he was named CIF Most Valuable Player in 2008.

John brings energy to BPA San Diego and a broad knowledge of the game. With his many years of playing and teaching, he has developed a coaching style that excites and motivates our athletes. Over the past few years he has worked with many current and former professional baseball players.

Ryan Smith, San Diego Baseball Instruction and CoachingRyan Smith

Ryan grew up in North San Diego County playing 4 years of Varsity baseball at Fallbrook High School where they were ranked #4 in the nation by Baseball America. Ryan played college ball at Graceland University, Butte College, and 2 summers in the Western Major Baseball League in Canada.

Ryan has been coaching at BPA for 4 years and has given more than 2,000 lessons. He coached at Sage Creek High School in 2015 and Fallbrook High School in 2011. Ryan’s love for the game and expertise in all facets of coaching and skill development makes Ryan an invaluable asset to both BPA and our athletes.

Sean Lucas, Hitting and Pitching Instruction in San Diego CountySean Lucas

Drafted in the 25th round by the Cincinnati Reds in 2012, Sean played 3 seasons of professional baseball (2012-2015) where he was a 2013 Midwest League All Star.

Having earned both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree, Sean stresses the importance of academics, commitment, and proper technique in his coaching. His focus, expertise and level of play throughout college, graduate school, and in the MLB gives Sean broad perspective on the dynamics of the game and he applies that knowledge to teaching and mentoring our BPA athletes.

James Hayashi

James is the Varsity Assistant Coach at Sage Creek High School. For the past two years, James was the JV head coach at Rancho Buena Vista High School, where for both years he led the team to records over .500.   James has also coached with the Vista Eagles, and other elite club teams all whom he led to many championships. Many of his players now play at the collegiate and professional levels. James is a BPA College Development Program coach.

James is the owner of So Cal Sporting Goods, LLC located on site at BPA San Diego.  So Cal Sporting Goods specializes in all Mizuno baseball, fastpitch softball, and volleyball products, and also produces uniforms and hats for club and little league teams.

Tim LearyTimothy Leary

Tim played professionally in Australia in 2014-2015, was a college standout at Westmont College (09-12) and Southwestern College (08-09) and played competitive baseball throughout high school at Coronado High. He is the current leader for multiple season and career offensive records at Westmont, was on the 2012 All GSAC team and was a NAIA Honorable mention All American.  Tim has his B.S. in Kinesiology and is currently studying for his C.S.C.S.  He is a BPA Team and a Strength and Conditioning coach.

Casey EdelbrochCasey Edelbrock

Casey pitched professionally in the Minor League for the Kansas City Royals and Perth Heat Baseball Organization in Australia, after wrapping up a successful college career at Lewis and Clark State College. He was an All American at Palomar College and played at Chico State.  Casey has held multiple coaching positions from Bullpen Coach and Pitching Instructor at Palomar College and Head Coach for the Boise Cubs Scout Team.  Casey has a degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Coaching. He joins BPA as a pitching instructor.

Kevin LovelaceKevin Lovelace

North County native, Kevin Lovelace, played professionally for the Evansville Otters Independent baseball team after graduating from Lewis-Clark State College with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and playing for the college in the NAIA World Series. Previously, Kevin played at Central Arizona Junior College for two years, taking third in the nation at the JUCO world series, and played at San Pasqual High School for the Varsity team all four years. Kevin been coaching high school and travel teams for over 6 years.
